Cool to room temperature between tempers.  Note: Tempering at 800-1,100\u00b0F results in a minor reduction in both corrosion resistance and toughness.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><b>Cryogenic Treating:<\/b> A cryo treatment is recommended after quench. She recommended the following options:<br>\r\n- A foil bag inside a vacuum furnace.<br>\r\n- A heat treat furnace filled with nitrogen during heat treating.<br>\r\n- A sealed foil bag inside another sealed foil bag during austenitizing.\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><b>Preheat:<\/b> Put in a preheated furnace at 1,110-1,200\u00b0F.  Equalize temperature.  Increase to 1,550-1,650\u00b0F.  Equalize temperature.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><b>Austenitize:<\/b> It is critical to <b>not exceed<\/b> the maximum austenitize temperature.  If you overshoot the maximum temperature by a small amount, toughness will go down dramatically.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Heat to 1,800-1,900\u00b0F and soak for a maximum of for 40 minutes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><b>Quench:<\/b> Plate, air or medium oil quench. Cool to 100\u00b0F before tempering.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><b>Cryo:<\/b> It is recommended to perform subzero or cryo to -185\u00b0F for 30 minutes before tempering.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><b>Temper:<\/b> Temper immediately after quenching. A third two hour tempering cycle is preferred.  Avoid tempering below 1,000\u00b0F.  Cool the blade(s) to room temperature before starting the next temper cycle.
