Cold Formed Pan Head 0-80 T5 Torx Screw
Cold Formed Head TolerancesMaterial: | 18-8 Stainless Steel |
Head Diameter: | .110" |
Head Height: | .035" |
Drive: | T5 Torx |
Torque: | 1.0 inch lbs |
Inside Diameter: | .193" |
Diameter: | .104" - .116" |
Thickness: | .031" - .039" |
If you want more precision and tighter tolerances, buy precision machined screws.
Cold Formed
The process of cold forming screws is fascinating. A wire is smashed into a die or dies and the head and drive are formed. Then the threads are rolled onto the shaft. The process is complete in a couple seconds. Many screws are made in a short amount of time so the cost per screw is low. The tradeoff is precision.
Passivation
The purpose of passivation is to remove iron from the surface. Iron on the surface of a part can be the place where corrosion starts. Passivation eliminates the potential problem. All stainless steel alloys have an oxide layer on the surface that resists corrosion.
18-8 Stainless
18-8 is a group of stainless steel alloys with 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Some of the alloys are 301, 302, 303 and 304. These alloys are austenitic and cannot be heat treated and hardened like martensitic alloys. Most 18-8 screws have a hardness around the low to mid 30s HRC. The advantage of 18-8 is corrosion resistance.

Cold Formed Pan Head 2-56 T8 Torx Screw
Material: | 18-8 Stainless Steel |
Head Diameter: | .160" |
Head Height: | .060" |
Drive: | T8 Torx |
Torque: | 2.2 inch lbs |
Coating: | Black Oxide |
Diameter: | .155" - .167" |
Thickness: | .053" - .062" |
If you want more precision and tighter tolerances, buy precision machined screws.
Cold Formed
The process of cold forming screws is fascinating. A wire is smashed into a die or dies and the head and drive are formed. Then the threads are rolled onto the shaft. The process is complete in a couple seconds. Many screws are made in a short amount of time so the cost per screw is low. The tradeoff is precision.

Nitriding is a process that diffuses nitrogen into the surface of a metal to create a thin hardened surface. Our nitrided 18-8 screws have a surface hardness above 70 HRC. The steel below the surface is soft and unaffected by the nitriding.
Other benefits of nitriding are extra corrosion resistance and a color change. The color of our nitrided screw range from gold to blue. The majority are a brown / bronze color with some iridescence. The color is in the surface of the steel but can be ground off. Nitriding is not a coating or electroplating. It will not chip and peel like chrome or nickel plating.

Cold Formed Pan Head 4-40 T10 Torx Screw
Material: | 18-8 Stainless Steel |
Head Diameter: | .215" |
Head Height: | .075" |
Drive: | T10 Torx |
Torque: | 4.7 inch lbs |

Diameter: | .205" - .219" |
Thickness: | .070" - .080" |

Swiss Lathe
Screws machined on a Swiss lathe are the best you can buy. Our screws are threaded the full length of the shaft. The thread relief under the head does not compromise screw strength.
6-4 Titanium
6-4 titanium is an excellent screw material. It is lightweight, tough, strong and can be heated or anodized different colors. Machining screws from 6-4 titanium is challenging but worth the effort.
6-4 Titanium Screws
Our 6-4 titanium screws are the best you can buy. They are made on a Swiss lathe and threaded for the full length of the shaft. Thread relief under the head is available and does not compromise screw strength.

Screws Made From 410 Stainless Steel
This stainless steel is a martensitic alloy. Our 410 stainless screws are heat treated to to the mid 40’s HRC.
The advantage of 410 stainless is strength. Heat treated 410 screws are more than 40% stronger than 18-8 screws. We made a video showing the difference in strength. To get the additional strength there is a decrease in corrosion resistance. We have seen occasional surface corrosion but it is easily removed.
All our screws made from 410 stainless are cold formed.
Cold Forming
The process of cold forming screws is fascinating. A wire is smashed into a die or dies and the head and drive are formed. Then the threads are rolled onto the shaft. The process is complete in a couple seconds. Many screws are made in a short amount of time so the cost per screw is low. The tradeoff is precision. Here are the head tolerances for the cold formed pan head screws we sell:
Size | Diameter | Thickness |
0-80 | .104" - .116" | .031" - .039" |
2-56 | .155" - .167" | 053" - .062" |
4-40 | .205" - .219" | .070" - .080" |
If you want more precision and tighter tolerances, buy screws made on a Swiss lathe.
Torque Specifications
It is important to tighten fasteners to the correct torque specifications. The values listed below are based on the parts being clean and dry.
Size | Torque |
0-80 | 1.0 inch pound |
1-72 | 1.5 inch pounds |
2-56 | 2.2 inch pounds |
4-40 | 4.7 inch pounds |

Most 18-8 screws have a hardness around the low to mid 30’s HRC. The advantage of 18-8 is corrosion resistance.
