Our synthetic ruby balls are Grade 25 which is the highest grade available. Ruby is very difficult to manufacture. Ruby is second to diamond in hardness.Synthetic rubies can be challenging to install. Use a concave installation tool to slowly press the ruby into place. If you use a flat tool the ball may shatter or crack, especially the smaller ruby balls. Do not use a hammer to install the ball.
The hole diameter is critical. If the hole is too small the ball will break. Experiment to determine what hole size works best for you. Because of installation difficulty, we do not recommend using rubies for detent balls. If you decide to use a ruby for the detent, be sure to have extra balls available. Also bevel the edge of the blade that contacts the ruby when closing. Do not use synthetic rubies for IKBS. If one ball breaks the pieces will cause all the other balls to break. |
